Safety Tips for Summer Fun

The beach and the swimming pool are calling your name this summer, and you�re probably taking the kids with you. All of that summer fun means bright sun and lots of activity in the water. So, before you head out for the day, take a minute to read these important safety tips for skin care and water safety.

Skin Care in the Sun
� Limit sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun�s UV rays are strongest 
� Keep your sunscreen current by checking the expiration date on the bottle
� Use SPF 30 or higher and apply early and often � 30 minutes before going outside, then every 2 hours you remain in the sun
� Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes, face, lips, ears and scalp

Water Safety
� Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards
� Never swim alone, even if you are a strong swimmer
� Make sure adults supervise children
� Teach children to always ask permission to go near water, enforce rules such as no diving in shallow areas and no running on the pool deck, and let them know it�s never okay to �pretend� drown or rough-house in the water
� Set and keep rules for everyone in your family or group, based on their swimming ability
� Wear a life jacket when boating or participating in other water sports
