It's Time to Head Back to School
As your students are beginning to head back to school, there are some important things to remember in order to keep them healthy and safe.
Healthy Sleep
Childrens health and behavior can take a nosedive when they get too far outside of a normal sleep schedule. Similarly, sleeping adequate amounts will go a long way to boost a childs energy and enthusiasm. Good-quality sleep also can help your child learn more easily and reduce many behavioral problems.
As a general rule, most children need about 10 hours of sleep a night; some need more. Each child is different and has his or her own way of approaching sleep, so find a routine that suits your family and stick with it.
Sleep Tips for Your Children
-Set a regular time for bed each night and stick to it. Routine is key!
-Avoid eating or drinking within a few hours of bedtime. Full tummies and lying in bed can result in heartburn or indigestion. Drinks before bed can result in late night bathroom visits which interrupt sleep.
-Limit screen time, even mobile devices, at least one hour before bedtime. Studies show that television and mobile devices stimulate or rev up the brain and body and can make falling asleep or sleeping soundly more difficult.
-Establish a calming bedtime routine. Restroom, clean teeth, story time or quiet reading before bed will set the mood for a restful night.
Get Moving
It is recommended that children and adolescents participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity most days of the week. Encourage kids to choose any type of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, playing tag, jumping rope, or swimming, as long as it adds up to at least one hour a day.
Taking everyday activities outside is a great way to encourage children to be active. Studying, normally an indoor activity, can take on a whole new dimension when done outside. Try turning typical studying into an outdoor activity, like incorporating addition into a hopscotch game or practicing for a spelling test while taking a walk in the evening.
Safe Travels
Its estimated that 24 million students nationwide start their school day with a trip on the school bus. Teach your bus riders these few tips to ensure they get to and from school safely.
Tips for School Bus Riders
-Do not play in the street while waiting for the bus.
-Carry all loose belongings in a bag or backpack and never reach under the school bus to get anything that has rolled or fallen beneath it.
-Line up facing the bus, not along side it.
-Move immediately onto the sidewalk and out of traffic after getting off the bus.
-Walk at least 10 steps away from the front of the bus so the driver can see you.
Tips for Carpool Riders
-Tell your child to NEVER get in the car with a stranger.
-Have a pre-determined place and time for everyone in the carpool to meet each day, both to and from school.
-Always wear your seatbelt whether you ride in the front or the back seat.
