Kids Eat Right Month
In 2014, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its Foundation announced the launch of Kids Eat Right Month, a month-long observance focused on the importance of healthful eating and active lifestyles for children and families. This year, the theme is centered around shop smart, cook healthy and eat right, so lets review the concepts behind the movement, along with tips from The Little Clinic, on incorporating the theme into your life to fuel the growing bodies of your children:
Shop Smart
The perimeter of your grocery store is usually where the fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy products and other non-processed foods can be found. Filling your shopping cart from these areas of the stores is the first step in creating meals and snacks that are good for the whole family.
Cook Healthy
Choosing a combination of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, low-fat dairy and other items is the right foundation for cooking a healthy snack or meal. Use ChooseMyPlate.gov to help you determine the right amounts of each food for a balanced meal. In general, the more colorful your plate, the better it is for you (eg., baked chicken, sweet potato, broccoli with sprinkled shredded cheddar cheese).
Eat Right
Now that youve cooked a healthy meal, remember that portion size is important to prevent over-eating. Choose a beverage like water or low-fat milk, rather than sugary drinks, and sit down with your entire family to enjoy the meal together. One of the best ways to eat right is to eat with those you love.
