Establishing Healthy Habits
Some say that doing a certain thing for two straight weeks will make that thing a habit. Lets take that idea a step further and think about establishing healthy and long-lasting - habits in the next generationour children.
Adults lead by example
Putting it plainly: children learn by example. If you find yourself saying Do as I say, and not as I do, you might want to reconsider what you are doing if you dont want your child to mimic your behavior.
Start early
Even young children can absorb the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Choosing healthy snacks, drinking water and being physically active are all examples of how establishing a healthy habit with your family will pay off in the long run.
Dont neglect healthcare
Studies show that women are 100 percent more likely to receive annual preventive health services. Men, be sure and receive preventive services such as physicals, vaccinations and other steps that can result in better overall health. Maybe getting your flu shot will show your child how important vaccinations are and why you want him or her vaccinated too.
Talk to your kids
Each life stage is different, so have those important talks with your kids throughout their lives so they know how to make appropriate choices. Examples can be discussing strangers with young children, maturing bodies with preteens and tobacco avoidance or driving safety with teens.
Have an open-door policy
Parents want nothing more than to provide a safe and positive childhood for their kids. Have an open-door policy that allows your children to come and talk with you about any subject, no matter how difficult. Maintaining an open, honest dialogue with your kids will establish a habit of being a continuous role model and confidant throughout their lives.
